July 2013 South and Southern African broadcasters today are faced with a number of challenges – from moving to digital feeds, to gathering and transmitting news from wherever events take place, to the need for broadcasts to be made available on smartphones and tablets. Graphic Image Technologies (GIT), a company specialising in broadcast and CCTV solutions, will be showcasing a range of innovative solutions to meet a number of broadcasting challenges at MediaTech 2013. From high definition electronic newsgathering and transmission via GSM networks, to video compliance recording, to a complete ‘TV channel in a box’ solution, to transmission via satellite to the home, GIT has the local broadcast market covered. One of the innovations on display will be the Harmonic product range, in particular the Over the Top (OTT) Video on Demand (VOD) solution. OTT VOD makes delivering broadcasting feeds to smartphones and tablets a simple process with intelligent transcoding servers that create different versions of video feeds for the various operating systems, as well as various different quality streams. Adaptive streaming ensures that the user receives optimal quality broadcasts depending on their available bandwidth. “Basically, Harmonic OTT automatically creates the correct version of video for the different operating systems like Android, iOS and Windows. It also creates, for example, a low-, medium-, and high-resolution video of the footage for each supported device. The user can then stream this video on demand to their handheld device, and the adaptive streaming technology will ensure they are viewing at the best quality possible with their current coverage. This solution is a brilliant innovation for the local market, where mobile broadband is not always available, but users still wish to be able to take advantage of live transmission and video on demand,” says Mark Chertkow, Managing Director of GIT. Another innovative solution on display is the TVUPack mobile live broadcasting solution. This range of portable, lightweight video capture and transmission solutions enables broadcasters to deliver professional broadcast-quality SD or HD video of live news and events over mobile networks, instead of having to rely on satellite or microwave solutions. With TVUPack, broadcasters can cover live breaking news from locations that are costly or difficult to reach with traditional methods, which is particularly applicable in the African market where traditional infrastructure is often lacking. GIT will also be showcasing the Channel in a Box from PlayBox Technology. This video playout solution integrates all the elements needed to keep a channel on-air by combining automation, playout and interactive graphics and advertising insertion within one box, with Serial Data In (SDI) or Internet Protocol (IP) streaming connectivity. For video compliance recording purposes, GIT has on offer the Actus View solution, an enhanced video recording solution which offers capturing of any number of audio and video channels at any bitrate or frame-size, content archiving and extraction, bookmarks, annotation, transcoding and delivery management all in a single solution, accessible from any computer within the broadcaster’s organisation. “To round out our offering, we will also be highlighting Astro’s solutions for full- service networks and digital reception systems. Astro delivers the entire range of products, tools and accessories to convert satellite feeds for consumption in buildings and hospitality environments, including satellite- and headend- technology, broadband amplifiers, optical transmission, passives, terrestrial technology and accessories,” Chertkow adds. “The world is moving at an ever-increasing pace, and broadcasters need to keep up with these trends to remain competitive.
